**Russia Attacks Medical Facility in Ukraine**
Russian forces attacked an oncology center in Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine, on December 21. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack “a heinous act of cruelty against civilians.”
The medical facility was hit by two guided aerial bombs, according to local authorities. Fortunately, no one was hurt because patients and staff were able to take shelter.
Zelensky said that Russia knew it was a medical facility and had been operating in Kherson since the start of the full-scale invasion. He accused Russian forces of intentionally targeting civilian areas.
**History of Attacks on Medical Facilities**
This is not the first time Russia has targeted medical facilities in Ukraine. Throughout its invasion, Russia has consistently attacked hospitals and clinics, especially in eastern Ukraine.
In July, a missile attack on a hospital in Kyiv killed 2 people and injured at least 32 others, including children. Just last month, a glide bomb attack damaged another cancer hospital in Zaporizhzhia.
**Calls for More Air Defense Systems**
President Zelensky has repeatedly asked Western allies to provide more air defense systems to protect critical infrastructure across the country. During a visit to Brussels on December 18, he called for an additional 19 air defense systems.
