Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to present a “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden on Thursday, in hopes of securing strong support from the US before Biden leaves office.
A senior official in Kyiv has stated that they want Biden to “make history” in his final months as president.
While the details of the plan have not been revealed, it is expected to include requests for military and financial aid, as well as future security guarantees.
Zelensky believes that this plan will serve as a “bridge” towards ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, which he believes could come to an end sooner than expected if the West strengthens Ukraine’s position.
In order to garner support for the plan, Zelensky has been heavily promoting it through various diplomatic efforts. He has been speaking at the United Nations, meeting with world leaders and US politicians, and even visiting an ammunition factory in Biden’s hometown.
Zelensky has also emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the plan must be agreed upon and implemented by October, November, and December. He has made it clear that he is counting on Biden’s support, as the situation could drastically change if Donald Trump were to win the election.
Trump has previously mocked Zelensky and has stated that he would push for a deal between Russia and Ukraine, which could potentially result in territorial losses for Ukraine and no guarantee against further Russian aggression.
The fear of such a scenario is what is driving the diplomatic efforts behind Zelensky’s victory plan. The success of the plan will largely depend on Biden’s response.
The plan will be presented to congressional lawmakers, as well as Trump and his presidential team.
