**Ukraine Offers to Help Slovakia with Energy Security**
President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine is ready to help Slovakia achieve energy stability and security. He made the statement on January 17 during a meeting with a delegation from the Progressive Slovakia political party.
Zelensky’s comments come after Ukraine stopped Russian gas transit via its territory, including supplies to Slovakia. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has threatened to limit aid to Ukrainians and cut off electricity supplies due to the termination of Russian gas transit.
**Ukraine Ready to Help**
“We are ready to help the Slovak people in ensuring their energy stability and security,” Zelensky said. He also emphasized that Ukraine’s decision not to renew a pre-war agreement to transit Russian gas was made to stop financing Russia’s war effort.
Zelensky reminded Fico that he had invited him to Kyiv to discuss the energy situation, but instead, another leader from Slovakia arrived. The president sees this as a signal that Slovakia will continue to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
**Slovakia Under Pressure**
Fico and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban have been among those opposing Ukraine’s decision not to extend the gas transit deal. Despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Orban and Fico maintain friendly ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Slovakia’s opposition parties have announced plans to initiate a vote of no confidence in Fico’s government over his governance and foreign policy direction.
