**Ukraine’s President Wants NATO Membership**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants his country to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He believes this is necessary to be strong like Russia.
**Long Road Ahead**
In 2022, Ukraine asked to join NATO. However, it still hasn’t received a formal invitation. At a recent meeting in Washington, D.C., NATO leaders said that Ukraine’s path to membership is “irreversible”. This means they think it will happen eventually, but no one knows when.
**Zelensky’s Plan**
In an interview, Zelensky mentioned that getting into NATO might be difficult because the US, Germany, and Hungary oppose it. However, he believes these countries would change their minds if former US President Donald Trump asked them to. He thinks Trump could provide security guarantees for Ukraine without having to talk to Russia.
**Plan B?**
If Ukraine doesn’t get into NATO as planned, Zelensky says they’ll just have to build a stronger military themselves. This means more defense systems like missiles and air-defense systems. The country has already been receiving aid from other NATO countries in its fight against Russia.
