Ukraine Sends Aid to Syria
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that the country has sent 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria. This is part of Ukraine’s “Grain from Ukraine” initiative.
The aid is meant to help people in Syria who are facing a food crisis. The Russia-backed government of former President Bashar al–Assad collapsed on December 8. A large-scale rebel offensive led to the fall of the regime.
The wheat flour will feed around 167,000 people over the coming weeks. Each bag can sustain a family of five for a month. Zelensky said Ukraine wishes Syria and its people “safety, stability, and recovery”.
Ukraine’s Grain from Ukraine program has been running since last fall. It has reportedly saved 20 million people from hunger, according to Zelensky.
