**Ukraine President Marks New Year with Optimism**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky marked the start of 2025 by looking back on a tough year. In a social media post, he said that every day in 2024 was “won” by Ukrainian warriors and the people.
Zelensky expressed pride in Ukraine’s ability to fight for its freedom every day. He said that the country had shown hard work and courage throughout the year, along with care, development, and love.
**Challenging Year on the Battlefield**
2024 was a particularly tough year for Ukraine on the battlefield. Ukrainian troops lost territory to Russian forces in northeastern Kharkiv Oblast and eastern Donetsk Oblast.
Russian troops captured Avdiivka, an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast, in February. This marked the start of Moscow’s offensives across the region. Russia continued to gain ground throughout the summer, approaching key towns like Pokrovsk and Vuhledar.
**Concerns for 2025**
As Ukraine looks ahead to 2025, there are concerns about the approach of US President Donald Trump. Trump has previously been critical of US military aid to Ukraine and wants to “get out” of the war. This could put pressure on Kyiv to make concessions in search of a settlement.
**Zelensky’s Message**
In his New Year’s message, Zelensky said that 2024 was another step towards justice, fair peace, Ukrainian victory, and life without war. He wished Ukrainians strength, unity, and inspiration for the coming year.
