On 11 October 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Pope Francis in the Vatican to ask for help in securing release of Ukrainian prisoners detained by Russia. The 35-minute encounter was their second face to face meeting in four months.
Pope Francis’ approach to the Russian conflict in Ukraine has been a source of controversy in the past. Notably, his calls to peace negotiations have been criticized for potentially benefiting Russia if they freeze the conflict without addressing Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
