President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met at the UN General Assembly. As a token of appreciation, President Zelenskyy presented PM Kishida with the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, stating that it was a symbol of gratitude from the entire Ukrainian people for Japan’s unwavering support since the start of the full-scale invasion.
During the meeting, President Zelenskyy expressed his thanks for Japan’s financial and humanitarian aid, which has amounted to over €12 billion. The leaders also discussed the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia and close any loopholes that may be used to evade them.
They also talked about working with G7 and EU partners to establish a mechanism for securing $50 billion from frozen Russian assets. Japan announced that it is preparing a new energy assistance package, which will include transformers, generators, and other equipment.
PM Kishida stressed the broader implications of the Russian war against Ukraine, stating that “today’s Ukraine may be tomorrow’s East Asia.” He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to opposing any unilateral changes to the status quo through the use of force.
This meeting highlights the growing international support for Ukraine and underscores the strategic importance of the conflict beyond Europe. It also showcases Japan’s increasing role in global security matters and its solidarity with Ukraine in the face of ongoing challenges.
