Since the beginning of the year, Russia has used over 6,000 drones in Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his speech that Russian forces have been attacking Ukraine since the beginning of this calendar year with more than 6,500 combat drones of the type Shahed.
He said that there was a threat of a Shahed attack almost every night in Ukraine, and at times, even in the early mornings and during the day.
The Ukrainian president acknowledged all those who defend Ukraine’s skies including those units that intercept Russian kamikaze aircraft.
Zelenskyy recalled that these combat drones, which were provided by Iran to Russia, have become one of Russia’s primary weapons of terror against Ukraine. Both Russians as well as Iranians have improved these drones to make them more precise.
“We have always told partners to be more decisive when it comes to such criminal alliances. In just one week, from Monday until today, Russian launched Shahed Drones. Ukraine recorded 129 drones on 18 October. Since the beginning of the year, Russia has used over 6,130 Shaheds in order to attack the country”, emphasized the Ukrainian President.
He said that Ukrainian defenders shoot down a large portion of these drones. Electronic warfare systems play a vital role in some attacks, but not all.
“That is why more pressure on Russia’s capability to produce such weapons is needed.” We need to be able to destroy all Shahed storage facilities and infrastructure for their production, Zelenskyy said.
He also said that Russian terrorists are able to take advantage of the time given to them by the reluctance of the free world to act and that decisive actions are needed.
On the evening 19 October, Ukrainian air defence shot down over thirty drones during a Russian assault on Ukraine. Thirteen more drones were lost because of locational issues.
