Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is open to the idea of foreign troops being stationed on Ukrainian territory until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO. This was said by Zelenskyy in Kyiv during a meeting with German politician Friedrich Merz.
Zelenskyy mentioned that earlier in Paris, he talked to French President Emmanuel Macron and former US President Donald Trump about security guarantees for Ukraine while it works towards joining NATO. He noted that France suggested deploying troops from certain countries to specific areas of Ukraine to ensure its safety until Ukraine joins the alliance.
However, Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine needs a clear understanding of when it will join both the EU and NATO before making any decisions. This was emphasized during his meeting with Merz on December 9th.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also commented on this issue while in Kyiv for a working visit on the same day. He proposed that Europe could send troops to Ukraine following a peace agreement brokered by Donald Trump. Tsahkna stated that NATO membership remains the best security guarantee for Ukraine, as supported by Zelenskyy.
Tsahkna added that if the US opposes Kyiv’s NATO membership, Europe should take measures to prevent further Russian aggression, including deploying troops to Ukraine after active hostilities cease.
