On 14 October, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky hosted a meeting of Supreme Commander-in Chief’s Staff. The Ukrainian leader stated on social media that the main topics of discussion were battles on the Pokrovsk front and Kurakhiv and Russian attempts to breach Ukrainian defences in Kursk oblast.
Pavlo Rozlach told TSN earlier that the Russian military had begun counteroffensive operation in Kursk Oblast by deploying 30,000 additional soldiers.
According to him, the Russian forces at present are not sufficient to defeat or repel Ukrainian troops. He estimated that Russia’s forces would need to be three times more in order to succeed in Kursk Oblast.
The Russian grouping includes both newly formed assault units and units that have been withdrawn from the Donetsk front and the Zaporizhzhia Front. Ukrainian forces continue to hold positions, sometimes attempting to improve tactically.
“I held a second Supreme Military Staff Meeting.” Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi gave a report on the operational state. The front line is awash with active operations, but the fighting in the Pokrovsk-Kurakhiv direction is particularly intense. The Russians have been trying for five days to breach our defenses in Kursk Oblast. “Our troops are holding and counterattacking,” Zelenskyy said.
He said that during the meeting he reviewed the intelligence analysis shared by military officials.
The Ukrainian president said that the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Foreign Intelligence Service had conducted a thorough analysis of who was helping Russia to wage its aggressive war on Ukraine – militarily, economically, and politically – both openly and secretly. They also looked at what steps we and our partners could take to weaken this criminal alliance.
He also mentioned the Defense Ministry’s report on current and upcoming procurement contracts, which included those that used partner assistance and investments by key partners in Ukraine’s defense industry.
In the first few weeks after the incursion began in Kursk Oblast on 6 August 2024, Ukrainian forces had taken control of about 1,300 square kilometers (approximately 1,300 square kilometers) of Russian territory.
In his first remarks on the issue, NATO chief Jens Stltenberg stressed that Russian military assets at Kursk are legitimate targets of Ukrainian forces.
