Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that the decision to withdraw the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Vuhledar was the right move in order to protect the lives of soldiers. This decision was made after Russian forces entered the city on October 1st, as reported by the Khortytsia military unit.
Vuhledar, a town in Donetsk Oblast with a population of 14,000 before the war, holds strategic importance as it is situated on high ground that the Russians want to use for further advances and offensives. During a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Kyiv, Zelenskyy explained the reasoning behind the withdrawal.
He stated that without proper weapons, Ukraine is unable to stop the Russian Federation. In the face of Russian attacks that destroy soldiers’ positions, the priority is to protect the lives of the soldiers, as they are more important than any buildings. Zelenskyy emphasized that these soldiers are citizens of Ukraine and their lives must be protected.
He also stressed the importance of international support and called on partners to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons, particularly long-range systems, to halt Russian advances. Zelenskyy believes that the decision to retreat and save lives is the correct one for the sake of the state and the heroic service of the soldiers.
