Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian leader, will join more than 40 European leaders in Budapest on November 8-9 for their first summit after Trump’s election.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, will make his first visit to Hungary during a wartime. He will attend two major European summits at Budapest on November 8-9. The diplomatic gathering will include the European Political Community Summit which will bring together more than 40 leaders. This will be followed by a meeting with the 27 EU Heads of State.
It is important that these meetings are held so soon after the US presidential election. Viktor Orban of Hungary, who is currently the European Council’s president, has aligned himself with Donald Trump, in contrast to other EU leaders, who have expressed concern about possible shifts in US policy.
Orban, who advocates an unconditional ceasefire and has refused military aid to Kyiv sees his position as similar to Trump’s promise to “end the War” – although the latter’s exact strategy remains unclear.
Zelenskyy, in his evening address, announced that he would be in Budapest tomorrow for the European Political Community Summit. He noted invitations from Orban and Charles Michel, President of the European Council.
The summit will explore new partnership possibilities and focus on European security challenges.
According to reports, Zelenskyy is working with Orban on a bilateral deal that addresses historical tensions and present challenges. The proposed deal may see Hungary softening their stance on Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and abstaining from membership discussions.
Sources in Brussels speculate about a possible “surprise”, a video appearance from Trump, depending on the outcome of the election. The EU Council declined to comment on the reports.
The European Political Community was established in response to Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine to foster political dialogue and cooperation between European nations.
