WP reports that President Zelenskyy’s recent US visit to present Ukraine’s “victory plan” failed to produce concrete results. This leaves Ukraine in a position of uncertainty regarding future support.
According to The Washington Post, a report on 5 October, Ukraine is in a precarious position with regards to its future security after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United States during the ongoing Russo Ukrainian war.
Zelenskyy, on his trip, presented a “victory strategy” to high-ranking US officials, such as President Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Kamala Harri. Details of the strategy remain unclear, as do its reception. The plan is likely to be based on either accelerated NATO Membership or binding security assurances from Ukraine’s Western Partners.
WP notes that Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington failed to produce significant results. Biden remained opposed to the provision of longer-range missiles that could strike inside Russia. Zelenskyy was also criticized by influential Republicans who largely ignored him or criticized him. Zelenskyy arranged a hastily arranged meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after Trump initially refused to meet.
According to WP’s Mykola Davydiuk a political expert based in Kyiv commented on Ukraine’s present standing:
“Nobody is planning on abandoning Ukraine, but Ukraine definitely is not in the top three main issues for the US at the moment.”
Zelenskyy’s team tried to convince Biden to support Zelenskyy’s victory plan in order to solidify his legacy prior to the end of his term. According to unnamed White House officials cited by the WP, the White House will not take any unpopular actions which could harm Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.
Oleksiy Honorcharenko, a Ukrainian parliamentarian from the European Solidarity party of opposition, expressed doubts about the victor plan’s potential to contain revolutionary elements. He stressed the need for more support from Western allies.
“If the West gave us the maximum amount, Ukraine could even achieve a victory today in the fullest sense of the word.”
Zelenskyy has another chance to present the victory plan during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, scheduled for 6 October in Ramstein, Germany. President Biden will be expected to attend. According to a Western Diplomat who spoke to WP under condition of anonymity, the meeting could result in additional aid for Ukraine.
