Zurab Japaridze, a leader of the “Coalition for Change”, was arrested this morning during a protest rally. He was taken to the Central Criminal Police Department and questioned.
Japaridze said that police blocked the road and arrested several people. Many officers chased protesters, but it’s unclear how many were caught. Japaridze was held at the police department for about 4 hours. He claims the questions he was asked were standard and not unusual.
The leader of “Coalition for Change” believes that arresting active participants in protests is a way to stop them from continuing to protest. He says that arrest, separation from the protest zone, fines, and time spent in detention can kill people’s motivation to keep protesting.
Despite this, Japaridze notes that the current protest has been ongoing for 4 days, with citizens attending demonstrations not just in Tbilisi but across the country.
