Former Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli has spoken out about his involvement in the Sandro Girgvliani case. He was questioned by a temporary investigative commission, led by Tea Tsulukiani.
Noghaideli said that he takes responsibility for the events surrounding Girgvliani’s murder. The former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, had planned to replace Vano Merabishvili as Minister of Internal Affairs with Noghaideli himself as Minister of Finance. However, the next day, Saakashvili decided to keep Merabishvili in his position.
Noghaideli explained that he discussed this change with Saakashvili several times. He refused to be appointed as Minister of Finance, and threatened to resign if it happened. Noghaideli said that he was surprised when the decision was changed back to keeping Merabishvili as Minister of Internal Affairs.
The former Prime Minister also spoke about his decision to dismiss State Minister Goga Khaindrava. He said that this decision was related to issues with other cabinet members at the time, and not directly related to Khaindrava’s work on conflict resolution.
