During a panel at the “Warsaw Security Summit”, President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili stated that there have always been and continue to be democratic, pro-European forces in the country, representing the majority. She emphasized that these forces know that Georgia’s future lies in Europe and that there is no alternative. The moderator asked the President about the upcoming elections on October 26 and whether she believes that democratic values will prevail.
President Zurabishvili responded by highlighting that despite Russia’s efforts to change Georgia’s European path, 80% of the population strongly supports it. She stressed that the upcoming elections will be crucial, as there are many forces working against the will of the people. However, she remains confident that Georgia’s future is in Europe.
The President also mentioned the importance of Ukraine‘s fight for independence and freedom, as it also impacts the future of Europe and the Black Sea region. She noted that the outcome of the elections in Georgia, as well as in Ukraine and Moldova, will determine the security and cooperation in the Black Sea, as well as the role of Europe in the Caucasus. She also highlighted the significance of Armenia’s path towards closer ties with the European Union.
President Zurabishvili concluded by stating that everything at stake in these elections is of great importance and will have a significant impact on the future of the region and Europe as a whole.
