UNESCO Protects Ukrainian Cultural Sites
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added two important cultural sites in Ukraine to its list of protected areas. This decision was announced by the Culture Ministry on December 12.
Two Important Sites Protected
One site is Babyn Yar, a place where nearly 34,000 Jews were killed by Nazi forces near Kyiv in September 1941. Many other people, including Soviet prisoners of war and Romani people, also lost their lives there. The other site is the Odesa Literary Museum.
Damage to Cultural Sites
The historic center of Odesa has been damaged by Russian missile strikes. This includes an attack on July 2023 that hurt over 20 architectural monuments and badly damaged the Transfiguration Cathedral.
Many Cultural Sites Damaged
Since Russia’s invasion began, the Culture Ministry has recorded 1,222 cases of damage to cultural heritage sites. These include religious buildings, museums, and other important places. UNESCO has confirmed that 457 sites have been damaged as of October 21.
