Changes to a law in Georgia have been made. This law is about how people work in government jobs.
The changes say that some people who are in charge of departments and their helpers do not need to speak the official language of Georgia or be citizens of Georgia.
A lawyer named Nika Simonishvili said this change is bad. He said it’s not just that these people don‘t have to know the language, but also that it’s not fair for them to get jobs without following normal rules.
The law normally says that people working in government jobs must be citizens of Georgia and speak the official language. But now, the person who hires them can decide if they need to be a citizen or speak the language.
Simonishvili doesn’t know if this change was meant to happen on purpose or by mistake. He said it’s possible that some people from other countries could get government jobs without knowing the official language of Georgia.
The changes were made quickly and passed in all three readings last week.
