Russian forces are getting closer to the Ukrainian town of Kupiansk. The town is now just 2 kilometers from the front line.
The head of the local military administration, Andrii Besedin, said on TV that the situation in Kupiansk is very difficult. Russian troops have been trying to attack the town for months, but Ukrainian forces have pushed them back.
Last month, Russian troops were stopped at the outskirts of Kupiansk. They tried to enter the town several times in December, but failed. Besedin said that on January 8, Russian forces launched 12 attacks on nearby settlements.
The Russians are trying to reach a main highway that runs through Kupiansk. If they succeed, it could give them control over the eastern part of the town.
Besedin warned that if the Russians manage to get equipment across the Oskil River, there will be a threat of a surprise attack on the Vovchansk sector and Kupiansk.
Despite the danger, many residents are not leaving the town. Only about five people leave each day from the 12 settlements in the area. Some 900 elderly people remain in the eastern part of the community and refuse to evacuate.
