Five people arrested during protests will have a lawyer assigned to them. This is because the lawyers and defendants left the courtroom in protest.
The lawyers were unhappy with the judge’s decision not to change the courtroom, despite their requests. They are not refusing to work on the case, but want a suitable place to discuss it.
Four of the arrested individuals are under 21 years old: Nikoloz Javakhishvili, Giorgi Gorgadze, Zviad Tsetskhladze, and Irakli Miminoshvili. Another, Insaf Aliyev, does not speak Georgian. This means they must be given a lawyer.
The other defendants can continue without their lawyers for now. The court proceedings are on hold until public defenders are appointed for the five individuals mentioned earlier.
Three of the detainees – Zviad Tsetskhladze, Vepkhia Kasradze, and Vasil Kadzelashvili – could face 6-9 years in prison if found guilty of organizing and leading group violence. Five others – Giorgi Gorgadze, Irakli Miminoshvili, Insaf Aliyev, Tornike Goshadze, and Nikoloz Javakhishvili – could get 4-6 years for participating in the same.
