**EU Plans New Sanctions Against Russia**
The European Commission will start working on new sanctions against Russia next week. The goal is to approve the package by February 24, which marks three years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
**Consultations with EU Countries**
From January 14, the European Commission will talk to EU countries about the 16th sanctions package. This process will help share ideas and address concerns. EU ambassadors will present their proposals, and then the European Commission will share its own plans.
**Poland Pushes for Quick Approval**
Poland is currently leading the EU and wants the new sanctions to be approved by February 24. However, it’s likely that Slovakia and Hungary will oppose this plan, making things more complicated.
**Previous Sanctions Approved**
Just last month, the EU approved its 15th package of sanctions against Russia. This included targeting people and organizations from Russia, China, and North Korea who are helping Russia sell oil during the war.
