Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, has expressed concern about the increasing violence and repression in the country. He said that this is moving Georgia further away from the European Union.
Ambassador Fischer made his comments on social media, saying it was a sad day for the country. Just last week, people were celebrating love, peace, and unity at Christmas and Flag Day. Instead, there are reports of violence against opposition politicians and non-governmental organization (NGO) representatives.
One opposition politician, Giorgi Gakharia, was attacked in the city of Batumi. He suffered a broken nose and concussion after being taken to hospital for treatment. Another incident occurred at the same hotel, where NGO representative Zviad Qoridze was confronted by members of the ruling “Georgian Dream” party.
Ambassador Fischer said that this kind of violence is not necessary, and Georgia should be moving closer to Europe, not further away.
