The European Council is currently meeting in Brussels. Georgia‘s political status is being discussed along with other key issues such as Ukraine, the Middle East and migration.
During the session EU officials raised concerns about Georgia’s democratic path. Josep Borrell expressed concern about the democratic backsliding of the country. He also stressed that the upcoming election will be crucial to determining whether Georgia aligns itself with Europe or moves further away from it.
“There is a clear democratic backsliding taking place in Georgia.” The next elections are the moment of truth and the Georgians must decide whether they want to move towards Europe or away from it, Josep Borrell said before the session.
Gitanas Nuseda, the Lithuanian president, echoed this sentiment and stressed the importance of Georgian parliamentary elections. “Georgia’s a big problem.” Georgia will hold crucial elections, as the Georgian people decide the direction. “If they maintain the status quo, Georgia doesn’t care about the chances of success and progress on the path to European integration.”
The session will also include discussions on Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky will present a five-point plan of victory to EU leaders. The escalating Middle East situation and the ongoing migration challenges are also on the agenda. The two-day gathering aims to address the pressing global issues.
