**Lithuania’s President Warns Against Russian Aggression**
Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda is urging countries in the region to take a stronger stance against Russia. He warned that a peace settlement without proper deterrents would allow Russia to consolidate its forces and prepare for further military action.
Nauseda emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s full involvement in peace negotiations. He believes that any ceasefire would provide Russia with an opportunity to rebuild its military capabilities. The Lithuanian President also raised concerns about potential Russian targets, including Ukraine and the Baltic countries.
**Lithuania Increases Defense Spending**
Lithuania has recently committed to increasing its defense spending to at least 5% of its GDP. This move is in response to ongoing fears of Russian aggression. Nauseda noted that even after a potential resolution to the war in Ukraine, Lithuania would remain exposed to threats from Russia for the foreseeable future.
**Regional Security**
Nauseda stressed the need for regional countries to strengthen their defense capabilities. He called for increased maritime capabilities in the region to prevent further incidents of damaged underwater infrastructure. NATO has launched a mission called “Baltic Sentry” to protect vital underwater infrastructure.
**NATO and EU Action Needed**
The Lithuanian President urged NATO and the EU to take stronger measures to prevent future incidents. Nauseda declared, “It is time for us to show some muscle.” He emphasized that it would be naive to assume other countries would prioritize Lithuania’s security if it failed to demonstrate its ability to protect itself.
