Civil Activist Walks Out of Courtroom in Protest
Isako Devidze, a civil activist, walked out of the courtroom during a hearing on January 8. This was after Judge Koba Chagunava found him guilty of blocking Rustaveli Avenue without any necessity.
Devidze had been fined 3,500 GEL earlier for disobeying a police order. He also left the courtroom along with his lawyer, Lasha Tkesheladze.
“Why are you judging people?” Devidze asked Judge Chagunava. “You’re not worthy of wearing that robe.”
The Ministry of Internal Affairs had accused Devidze and another civil activist, Mariam Gachechiladze, of blocking the road during protests. Both were being jointly tried by Judge Chagunava.
Devidze’s lawyer also left the courtroom in protest. The hearing continues.
Judge Koba Chagunava said that using the courtroom for “performance” was nothing new. He warned that he would take measures if people couldn’t control themselves and spoke disrespectfully in court.
