Serbian dairy farmers are on the move. They started a protest drive on Wednesday morning to head towards the town of Bogatic in western Serbia.
The farmers are unhappy with how the government is handling their problems. The Internal Affairs Ministry has asked them to give statements about the protests, which they see as another form of repression by state institutions.
Slobodan Brkic from the Our Milk association says that things have not improved since the last protests. He claims that the farmers are being unfairly targeted and called to answer for allegedly causing traffic hazards with their tractors.
“We’re not afraid,” Brkic said. “If the state wants to destroy us, we’ll keep fighting until the end.”
The farmers are protesting because milk prices have dropped due to imports and livestock prices are very low. They feel that their rights are being ignored by the government.
Brkic is particularly upset with Minister Aleksandar Martinovic. He claims that the minister is not willing to listen to the farmers’ concerns and has even admitted to making decisions that would harm them.
“We have nothing to talk about,” Brkic said. “He’s planning to turn arable land into a mine, which would be our destruction.”
