The European Parliament Does Not Recognize the Georgian Government.
The Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, said in an interview that they do not recognize the government or President of Georgia. He described Salome Zourabichvili as a leader who represents democratic resistance.
McAllister met Zourabichvili two years ago and was impressed by her personality. He believes she is fighting for democracy and freedom in Georgia. On December 18, 2024, Zourabichvili gave a powerful speech to the European Parliament. She talked about the current protest movement in Georgia, which started after the October parliamentary elections.
Zourabichvili compared the situation in Georgia now to what happened in 1921. This is why she believes that the people of Georgia are reacting with courage and determination. They see their freedom, future, and independence being threatened.
The Georgian government is using divisive language to create polarization among the people. They portray themselves as defenders of peace and traditional values, while calling their opponents criminals and enemies of the state. This group is also accused of trying to open a second front in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
McAllister made it clear that Salome Zourabichvili remains the legitimate President of Georgia until new elections can be held in a fair and transparent environment. He believes she is the only representative of Georgia who can speak for them internationally.
