NATO was created in 1949, during the Cold War’s early stages, to provide collective protection against the Soviet Union. Stubb said: “I firmly believed that we are witnessing the creation now of NATO 3.0.” He added: “We are returning to the original NATO role as a strong military alliance and deterrence with a threat primarily coming from Russia.” Finland joined NATO in early 2023, after abandoning its long-standing neutral stance due to Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. “We share a common understanding within the alliance of our security challenges. I believe it is important that we now work on both – defense and deterrence. “Earlier this week, Mark Rutte was appointed as the new Secretary General of NATO. He stressed on his first day in office that the alliance must ensure that Ukraine “prevails” as a sovereign nation. “Rutte said that NATO members must “spend more” to “increase the collective defense,” adding that “NATO’s partnership… have to be wider, and deeper, considering all the insecurities around the world.” “Helsinki sent 25 military packages from September 2024, with the total amount of Finnish military aid to Kyiv standing at 2.3 billion euro ($2.5 billion), the Ministry of Defense reported.Finland is also hosting a new tactical Battlegroup and a new headquarters for NATO land operations.
