**Russia Loses Troops and Equipment in Ukraine**
Russia has lost 790,800 troops since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This number includes 1,250 casualties over the past day. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported this information on January 1.
In addition to troop losses, Russia has also lost significant equipment, including:

* 20,043 armored fighting vehicles
* 32,675 vehicles and fuel tanks
* 21,532 artillery systems
* 1,256 multiple launch rocket systems
* 1,032 air defense systems
* 369 airplanes

* One submarine
**Ukraine Conducts Prisoner Exchanges**
Over the past year, Ukraine has conducted 11 prisoner exchanges and secured the return of 356 people. This is a significant increase from 2023.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his New Year’s video greeting that no one would give peace to Ukraine as a gift, but he believed the United States would stand together with Ukraine as it fights to stop Russia’s invasion.
**Russian Attacks Damage Infrastructure**
Russian missile and drone attacks on December 31 injured at least one person and damaged residential buildings and infrastructure in Kyiv and Sumy oblasts.
An oil depot in Russia’s Smolensk region caught fire following a drone attack overnight on December 31.
