Clashes Expected in Abkhazia on November 15
The Chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, Jemal Gamakharia, has warned that a big clash and resistance are expected in Abkhazia on November 15. This is due to the ratification of a draft law on regulating the legal status of multifunctional complexes.
According to Gamakharia, it’s difficult to say whether the document will be ratified or not. However, he believes that even if it is accepted, there will still be resistance at the implementation stage. The opposition has been protesting against the law, which they claim would allow Russia to buy apartments in Abkhazia.
Gamakharia stated that the pre-election background gives these documents special importance. He also claimed that all agreements and laws accepted by the de-facto government of Abkhazia under Russian pressure are aimed at annexation. The society opposes this, he said.
Russian media has been making open threats against the Abkhazian society, warning them to stop their resistance or face suppression by Russia. Gamakharia believes that it’s clear whose interests these investments are in – Russia’s.
The protest wave started after the parliament adopted a law regulating some concepts of an intergovernmental agreement on investments with Russia. The opposition claims that this is about selling apartments in Abkhazia to Russia and opposes the ratification of the document.
On November 11, five activists were arrested after participating in a fight with a member of the parliament. Although three of them have since been released, tensions remain high.
