**Thousands of Ukrainians Held in Russian Prisons**
More than 16,000 Ukrainian civilians are being held in Russian prisons. This is according to Ukraine‘s Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets.
**Limited Options for Release**
International law does not allow for the exchange of civilians for military prisoners. This means that thousands of Ukrainians, including journalists and women, may be trapped in Russian prisons with limited options for release.
**Women and Children Affected**
Among those held in captivity are 301 women and at least 19,500 Ukrainian children who have been deported to Russia. Many of these children face coercive adoptions and indoctrination in Russian institutions.
**Torture and Abuse Alleged**
Many Ukrainians who have been released through prisoner exchanges have reported severe torture and mistreatment during their detention. Moscow troops are also accused of killing prisoners of war, with 109 confirmed deaths in 2024 alone.
**Investigations Launched**
Ukraine has launched nearly 170,000 investigations into war crimes and national security violations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. However, the Kremlin denies these allegations.
