US Republicans Disagree with Ukraine on Elections During War
The US is divided over the idea that elections cannot take place in Ukraine while it’s at war. This is according to Filip Styczynski, a director from the Center for Intermarium Studies.
In an interview with Euromaidan Press, Styczynski said that people in the US don’t fully understand the situation in Ukraine. He believes that if Ukraine wants to be part of the free world, it should avoid being seen as two opposing dictators. He added that it’s difficult but not impossible for Ukraine to hold elections.
Styczynski mentioned a former top American diplomat who thinks Ukraine should hold elections despite the war. This diplomat compared Ukraine’s situation to the US holding an election during its civil war in 1864.
Ukrainian law says elections cannot be held while there is war. However, some people think this might not be true. A recent survey showed that many Ukrainians are against holding presidential or parliamentary elections.
There’s also a new plan to pressure Ukraine into negotiating with Russia. This plan involves threatening to cut off US weapons support. Former Trump officials have reviewed this plan.
