**Russia Regains Control of Village in Kursk Oblast**

The village is located about 42 kilometers (26 miles) north of a Ukrainian-occupied town called Sudzha.
**Six Months of Fighting**
Ukraine launched an attack into Kursk Oblast in August 2024. After six months of fighting, Russian troops have regained control of about 64% of the territory in the region. This was stated by a senior Russian General Staff officer named Sergei Rudsky earlier this month.
Rudsky said that Ukrainian soldiers still control around 500 square kilometers (193 square miles) out of an initial 1,268 square kilometers (490 square miles) seized by Ukraine.
**Russian and Ukrainian Casualties**
Russia has reported that it has suffered nearly 40,000 casualties in Kursk Oblast. This includes over 16,000 soldiers who have been killed. Another 909 Russian soldiers are being held as prisoners of war. However, the accuracy of these claims cannot be verified by The Kyiv Independent.
**North Korean Troops Help Russia**
Russia’s forces in Kursk Oblast have received help from North Korean troops deployed last fall to counter the Ukrainian incursion.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has stated that Ukraine may use its foothold in Kursk Oblast as leverage in potential peace talks. The Ukrainian attack into Kursk Oblast has disrupted Russia’s ability to carry out large-scale operations in northeastern and southern Ukraine.
