SPP, the state-owned gas importer in Slovakia, told Reuters that European firms were not close to a deal with Azerbaijan for replacing Russian gas flowing through Ukraine. This contradicted earlier media reports which said a deal would be imminent.
As part of an agreement signed in 2019, the Ukraine is currently transiting Russian gas to Europe. The deal expires in December 2024. Azerbaijan has been approached by Europe and Ukraine to replace Russia as the supplier.
Bloomberg reported on October 1 that energy companies in Hungary and Slovakia are close to signing a contract with Azerbaijan for up 12-14 billion cubic metres of gas per year. The report cited people familiar with the negotiation.
Slovak energy provider SPP denied these reports in a Reuters statement.
SPP issued a statement that read: “We regularly discuss this topic with our partners. However, the information about a gas supply agreement being concluded with SPP’s participation is not true.”
Slovakia is one of the most dependent countries on Russian energy. While Moscow will cut most of its pipeline gas transit into Europe in 2022 Slovakia, Austria and Hungary remain heavily reliant on Russian imports.
Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani president, said on September 6 that negotiations were underway with the EU and Moscow to transport Azeri Gas after Ukraine stopped transiting Russian Gas. Azerbaijani gas would first have to transit through southern Russia, before reaching Ukraine.
Kadri SIMSON, EU Energy Commissioner, said on September 11 that Europe is “fully commited” to the phase-out of Russian gas. It is “ready to survive without this Russian gas coming through the Ukrainian transit route.”

“And we assure you that we will stand firmly alongside our Russian comrades until the day of victory,” said North Korean Foreign Minister Choe son Hui during her talks with Sergey Lavrov, her Russian counterpart.
Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, said that this “cannot help but surprise” given the Turkish leadership’s statements about their willingness to mediate Ukraine and Russia.
