Poland is helping to train volunteers from around the world to join a new army unit called the Ukrainian Legion. This group will fight for Ukraine, which is at war with another country.
The first group of Ukrainian Legion members has already been trained in Poland and has gone to Ukraine to continue their training. They were sent there by Vasyl Bodnar, who is Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland. He told a news organization called Radio Free Europe that the next group will start training on January 10, 2025.
The volunteers will be armed and trained by the Polish army. The Polish government has promised to provide equipment and infrastructure for the legion. Ukraine will give them uniforms and medical supplies.
Ukraine’s defense minister said that people from all over Europe should join the Ukrainian Legion because they will receive high-quality training. They will also get the best equipment from Ukraine’s friends in other countries.
The Czech Republic is thinking about starting a similar group, called the Ukrainian Legion, next year.
