**Georgia’s Abkhazia Region in Chaos**
The president of Georgia’s Russian–occupied Abkhazia region, Aslan Bzhania, has resigned from his position. This comes after days of mass protests against a proposed investment agreement with Russia.
**Protests Intensify**
Demonstrators stormed government buildings in the regional capital city of Sukhum on November 15. The protesters are against a law that would allow Russians to buy property in Abkhazia. Abkhazia is internationally recognized as part of Georgia, but it has been under Russian control since 1992.
**Protesters Refuse to Back Down**
Protesters have been rallying outside the parliament building, calling the proposed law one-sided and unfair. They have thrown eggs and bottles at police officers and used a car to breach the fence. The opposition leader, Levan Mykaa, has announced that protesters will occupy the building until the president resigns.
**New Acting President**
Aslan Bzhania’s resignation is conditional on the protesters withdrawing from government property. If they don’t comply, he said he would withdraw his resignation. The region’s vice president, Badra Gunba, is now acting president of Abkhazia.
