Ukraine strikes key oil storage depot in occupied Luhansk Oblast, disrupting Russian military logistics

Recent Ukraine has intensified their campaign against fuel and ole storage facilities that are crucial for fueling Russian vehicles, aircraft and equipment.
Due to its location, the oil depot in Rovenky is of strategic importance. It serves as a hub for Russian military operations in Eastern Ukraine.
Since 2014, Rovenky is under Russian occupation. It is located over 110 km away from the current frontlines of Ukraine. Since 2014, Russia uses the local oil depot, located next to the railroad, to store POL for its troops stationed and deployed in occupied Luhansk Oblast.
According to the General Staff, the operation was carried out by the of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense in collaboration with other components of Defense Forces.
The oil depot in Rovenki in occupied Luhansk Oblast that was targeted by yesterday night is one of only a few such facilities in the area.

NASA Firms, which monitors global fires, confirmed that a fire had broken out in the northeastern suburbs of Rovenky.
A Russian Telegram channel called “Intsydent Luhansk” reported that ten drones had attacked an oil depot at Rovenky. Russia intercepted eight of them. Two drones, however, made it through and ignited a fuel tank. The channel claimed that forces had also attempted to shell the facility as firefighters worked to extinguish a blaze.
Intsydent, a local news outlet, has shared photos that allegedly show debris from drones at Rovenky Oil Depot.
This is not the first attack on the Rovenky Oil Depot.
In May 2024 Ukrainian forces attacked the facility, presumably using ATACMS rockets, killing one person and injuring at least six others.
On 24 April 2023 an alleged Ukrainian UAV attacked destroyed a fuel tank in Rovenky.
A missile strike on 1 July 2022 destroyed an industrial facility near the oil depot.
On 26 February 2022 – 4 days after the full-scale by Russia – Ukraine hit the oil depot using the Tochka U missile.
