Ukraine‘s 77th Separate Airmobile Brigade employed reconnaissance drones to target and FPV drones to attack.
Militarnyi reported that Ukrainian drone operators successfully struck a Russian Buk M2 air defense system, citing combat footage shared by the communications division of Ukraine’s 77th Separated Air Assault Brigada.
Ukraine has prioritized the destruction of Russian air defense systems. The destruction of Russian air defense systems opens the door to more effective drone and missile strikes by Ukraine, as well as a greater operational use of Ukraine’s military aircraft. Since October 22, Ukraine has targeted five medium- and long-range air defence systems as well as two Russian radars. In that time, several more short-range air defense systems were destroyed.
According to the video footage, the Brigade’s Strike Drones Company began the operation by locating the target with a reconnaissance drone and then coordinated the subsequent strikes. Militarnyi claims that the FlyEye reconnaissance drone is likely the model shown in the video.
Militarnyi notes that the drones used to carry out the strike were FPV drones. However, the low-quality footage “doesn’t allow a definitive assessment of strike results,” Militarnyi says.
The Buk-M2 is an air defense system designed to protect troops from aircraft, drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as helicopters.
