Zelensky: Ukraine and US have a ‘potential for greater cooperation’ following Trump’s victory

In his evening speech on Nov. 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that the United States has supported Ukraine throughout the war. He also urged President-elect Donald Trump maintain strong relations with this embattled nation.
Zelensky stated that “we have the potential to strengthen our cooperation on defense, economy, and the future after war.” “This will make Ukraine, America and the free world more successful.”

Zelensky has called for greater co-operation, while Trump has repeatedly criticized the Ukrainian President on the campaign trail.
Trump has blamed Zelensky and Biden for the Russian invasion of Ukraine without mentioning Putin. He also referred to Zelensky’s role as a “salesman”, for securing too much assistance, which Trump considered excessive.
Zelensky’s relationship with Trump is complicated. A major scandal centered around a phone call in 2019 during which the then-President Trump allegedly pressured Zelensky into investigating his political rivals through withholding military assistance. The phone call led the first impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Zelensky, despite the past tensions in his speech, attempted to invoke memories about the strong U.S. Foreign Policy under former — trying to link Trump with the former President.
“It’s not without reason that Ronald Reagan has been mentioned so much these days. People want confidence, freedom, and a normal life.” For , that means a life without Russian aggression and with a powerful America, a stronger Ukraine, and strong allies.
Zelensky shared Ukraine’s five point victory plan with Trump at a meeting held in New York, towards the end of September. Zelensky invited Trump, who accepted, to visit Ukraine during the meeting.
Zelensky, in his evening speech, stressed that “it was very important for us, in Ukraine, and for all of Europe, to hear the words of then-45th US President, about ‘peace by strength’,” referring to Trumps first term.
Zelensky concluded, “America and the world will benefit undoubtedly if this policy principle becomes the 47th president of the United States.”
